Lydia Wong,  Piano

Chinese-Malaysian pianist Lydia Wong began her musical training at age five in Malaysia where she completed the London College of Music Diploma in Piano Performance under the guidance of Patricia Chan and Ching Ching Lee.

In 2003, she came to the United States to continue her piano studies with Dr. Janice Park at Irvine Valley College, CA. There, she performed with the Irvine Valley College Wind Symphony and was a recipient of the Tonya Reed Memorial Scholarship. A year later, she transferred to the University of Texas at Austin, where she received her Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance under the tutelage of Dr. Betty Mallard. Most recently in January 2010, Ms. Wong completed her Master’s degree in Piano Performance at New York University, where she studied with the Spanish pianist Dr. José Ramón Méndez.

In Austin, Ms Wong was a piano teacher for the University of Texas at Austin (UT) Piano Project, as well as a faculty member at The Armstrong Community Music School (ACMS).  At UT, she taught private lessons to elementary students, and at ACMS she taught ‘Music for Little Mozart’ group classes to students between 4 and 6 years old. She also served as a piano adjunct at New York University for more than a year, teaching college students (music and non-music majors) in both private and group settings, from beginner to advanced levels.

Ms. Wong has been a regular participant in The Gijón International Piano Festival in Gijón, Spain since 2006 where she has had the opportunity to perform in recitals and study with well-known pianists and pedagogues such as Julian Martin, Robert McDonald, Boris Slutsky, Marc Durand, and Blanca Uribe. This past summer in Gijón, Ms. Wong performed along with other pianists in an outdoor plaza in a ten-hour piano-playing marathon marking the tenth anniversary of the festival. She has also performed in master classes for concert pianists such as Alessio Bax and Anne-Marie McDermott.

Currently, Ms. Wong enjoys a busy schedule of teaching and continuing her piano studies in New York City.
